New York’s Fashion’s Night Out Offers Escapism to the Recession-Weary

The crowd on the third floor of Barneys men’s section was getting anxious.
“I can’t see anything but the back of a guy’s head,” one teenage girl in a black fur coat complained.
Ten feet in front of her, a hand clutching an iPhone rose above the sea of bobbing heads – one onlooker had cleverly realized he could use the phone’s camera feature as a periscope to see in front. About six other iPhones sprouted up as others followed suit.
“Can you see them?” Another girl asked impatiently.
Then, a fireworks show of camera flashes erupted. Like a school of fish, the crowd shifted right and then left. The chatter in the room rapidly grew to a roar. From behind a line of suited security guards, two pixie-like girls with rumpled blond hair emerged – finally, the Olsen twins had arrived to serve everyone cocktails.
Scenes like this were the norm yesterday at New York’s Fashion’s Night Out. Down on the street, clusters of women in stilettos and men in skinny jeans and blazers rushed back and forth across Madison Avenue – whether it was to press against the window of DKNY to see model Coco Rocha’s dance performance, or just to see why cameras were flashing outside of the Calvin Klein Collection.

Food and Fashion Make an Ideal Night Out

We’ve all felt the rumblings of tomorrow’s late-night kick-off to the Autumn/Winter 2009 fashion season: Fashion’s Night Out. The extravaganza promises to give the recession-weary shoppers from around the world a chance to mingle with designers and celebrities at stores in 12 countries, in the hopes of giving the fashion industry a much-needed defibrillation.
Many stores are recognizing that fashion should be complemented with beverages and hors d’oeuvres (plus it only takes a martini or two to inspire a giddy shopping spree), thus making Fashion’s Night Out a perfect warm-up to a night of fine dining. We’ve scoured the list of Thursday evening’s events in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Madrid and hand picked a sampling of stores that are offering particularly unique and appealing cuisine, cocktails and pre-dinner entertainment. Each store has been paired with a conveniently close Ubi Ubi-listed restaurant, so you don’t have to stagger too far with heavy bags dangling from each arm.
